I like the personality of this next Hashira. It's like a huge cold splash of water from Rengoku where he was more noble even with his quirks. Uzui's just hilarious. Yeah, holy shit, that last episode was awesome!  I love watching Tanjiro's growth, and I loved that he was able to do it with the black sword that was supposedly supposed to be so weak.  Still trying to figure out what the hell is up with that flame swordsman he sees in his visions.  Maybe it was his dad?  because apparently that adult Tanjiro looking guy is just him in some kind of vision/inherited memory?  I dunno, I'm kinda confused by what's going on there and maybe I just need to go back and watch the first couple episodes and then the arc in the forest so I can make more sense of it lol.

I'm gonna bet 2 theories with Genya:

 

1. He's been a demon since before his slayer exam. Like probably has some simlar story to Nezuko to how he became one but somehow has more control over his human side which they'll def go into.

2. Hybrid Demon-Human born. Probably has conditions of him switching and explains why he can go out in sunlight u like Nezuko.

I legit thought there was gonna be a twin brother thing going which would explain why Tanjiro thought he had a missing tooth and was corrected by Genya. But with him being demon. It makes a lot of sense because boom, just heals faster.

 

As for the Flame Swordsman? It's one hell of a misdirection they're doing here to see if he's Tanjiro's dad or something more. I can't wait to see what the prestige there reveals.

My daughter keeps asking me if we can watch Demon Slayer together. I still don't know much of anything about this story. What say ye re: how appropriate you think this would be for a 12 (going on 13) year old?  I'm sure I watched worse at that age myself because my parents were pretty disinterested in what I was watching on TV, but I am trying to be a bit more aware of the content my kids are consuming without being too overbearing about it...

 

I'm not so much concerned with profanity, because honestly she hears enough bad language around the house coming out of my mouth  I'm wondering more about how violent/gory or scary it is, because she does scare somewhat easily (we don't need nightmare fuel for her), and I'm wondering how much fan service-y stuff there is.

So the story itself is a kid (Tanjiro) who lives in the mountains with his mother and siblings selling charcoal ends up losing his family to a demon devouring them. One of the older sisters tho, survives but because of the attack, turns into a demon herself and he wants to of course save her. And of course a demon hunter shows up and tries to kill the demon sibling. Tanjiro learns about the world of said demons and demon hunters and convinces the hunter to let his sister live and train him to become a hunter so that he can find a cure for his sister to be human again. So the series is that journey, discovering many things about himself, his family, etc. Animation is gorgeous, character and story keep you riveting. And I totes get you wanna be a good parent to your kid while also making sure she can handle what she sees. kudos

The language is honestly not too bad. I vaguely can only think of maybe 1 or 2 characters that would actually curse but then I'm also not listening to it dubbed so idk what my change between english and japanese.

The main thing is VERY MUCH YES there is gore. And it pretty much hits you worse than Disney style in ep 1 or maybe 2 when Tanjiro loses his family. From large amounts of blood spilling, fairly graphic injuries happening that on occasion even make me squirm a bit. And of course a good amount of demons feasting on humans. The battles themselves get hugely intense and while a lot of it is happening fast, it. is. gory and bloody AF. So if you're worried about what might scare her. I suggest watching at least some of the first few episodes or maybe some quick youtube vids to get an idea. There is plenty of fun stuff too and light hearted moments, but when it gets down to business and fights. Ya gonna get a lot of blood and gore.
 

Fan service........I don't think there's too much if any to be honest. Zenigatsu hits on ladies a lot but not in a lewdy way really. I think if there's any it's when you get to the Red Light District Arc because geisha/aka prostitutes (one of the Hashira in this arc is also poly with 3 wives but dunno if you care about that) and the current arc we're in now because there's a couple hot springs. But I legit for the life of me can't think of any major fan-service-y scenes.

Blood and gore aren't necessarily so bad in theory, because in some shows/styles it's kind of just silly, but if that goes along with a bit of a horror vibe, like super spooky demons that will cause her imagination to run wild (she is already kind of afraid of the dark still) then that could be problematic. I guess I'll just have to watch a few episodes myself and see what I think! Thanks for the input. I'm leaning towards us watching the show together... but I will review a few episodes first.

Ah, horror vibe i totes get. I don't get that at all in the battles or majority of scenes compared to other series. But i def agree to do a pre-watch do get a better feel for it since you know your kid and what she can handle better than i do.

The art style is phenomenal and how well they blend the 2D and 3D bits is almost on par with Chainsaw Man in how well they do it.
