    HI!

    metaaaa
  2. My home decoration style is pretty much "attempt to find enough space for ALL THE BOOKS" Then M. collects comics art so that's the rest of our wallspace claimed... Though we also do have a lot of Persian/Oriental rugs, which we both like, and M's dad happened to have quite a few he wasn't using in his own house because of some circumstance I don't really know (both M and his dad are kind of... let's say "collectors" of things.). Anyway, FIL handed a bunch down to us & now our living room kind of looks like a rug dealership.

    Roll Call

ohai, I have chronic idiopathic urticaria too (For those not in the know: this diagnosis means "you have hives, we dunno... maybe it'll go away at some point")

    [Books General]

Reading "Moby Dick", lord help me. It's got, if possible, even more whaling in it than you might think. But also more stealth gay, which is a nice diversion when half the chapters are about stuff like the precise volume of oil in a sperm whale's cerebellum.
  6. I think Nolan may have been trying to deliberately disassociate his Gotham from NYC. But it's plenty obvious in other Batman media. Only showing your canon ignorance if you think Gotham = Chicago, foo'
  7. For goodness sake. This is so well-established that New Yorkers literally use "Gotham" as slang for their own city. cf "The Gothamist" and such.

himemiya here. Hi My life is now grading a trajillion papers about "The Scarlet Letter" and then collapsing in a stupor after my daughter goes to bed (plus worrying about the end of the world) so I'm likely to be pretty MIA, but helloa

    Roll Call

I'm late to this party but I saw cassowaries at the zoo once, and they are straight up terrifying murder birds. Definite Jurassic Park feels.
  12. Heavy hitters are really taking out the popcorn this round Y'all still wrong about Infinity War though, that film was way overbloated and had serious narrative pacing issues. I guess this bothers me more than it does most...

    Best Quentin Tarantino Movie?

Sometimes the popular view is right. Gotta give it to Pulp Fiction. Though I haven't seen all of these (no Django, Death Proof)
  14. Posit: most of the satisfaction of "Infinity War" relies upon an audience already knowing the characters. "Ragnarok" does too to a certain extent, but also stands on its own as an excellent film. Whether or not a film stands alone isn't necessarily the most important criterion objectively; and of course "Infinity War" is explicitly not supposed to do so. But for me, it's a crucial criterion and one that significantly affects my appreciation of a film, because it takes a lot to make a work of art capable of standing alone and I feel that. (Kind of like there's a big difference between writing a deeply moving Harry Potter fanfic, and actually creating the character of Harry Potter that spawned those thousand fics.) I mean, also Ragnarok was more fun, as others have noted... and when it comes to superhero movies I'll take fun over "moving" most times, because superhero movies are just not as deeply moving to me as great realist artworks like "Lawrence" or "Zhivago" or "Painted Veil" - but they're a heck of a lot more fun. Working to the medium's strength. But it's def interesting to hear your thoughts about why you chose the other movie!
  15. I'm mostly just annoyed my fave is losing I did think Infinity War had some serious overstuffing problems, but it's not in any way a *bad* movie, enjoyed it too. I just think Ragnarok was a stronger, more cohesive film.
  16. Thor Ragnarok is my #1 MCU. Very sad if it loses to overstuffed, overhyped, unfinished "Infinity War"
  17. OMG, I forgot about the "Watchmen" movie

    Personality Types Test

I got "Campaigner" (ENFP) I always get annoyed with the feeling/thinking questions, because I've studied the cognitive science of emotions and thus believe in their importance and significance... from a *rational* rather than an instinctive perspective. So I'm kind of like does that mean I'm actually more a thinking person because I'm hitting the "feeling" button on a *logical* basis. (Or actually a feeling person because of how annoyed this inaccuracy in the test is making me! xD)

    Star Trek General

Yeah one of the things I'm maddest about is the lack of ensemble development. (See especially that spoiler you mentioned ) And yeah, I know original Trek was all about that holy Kirk-Spock-McCoy trinity, but I've tended to like Disco's non-Michael-focused episodes best. And now this whole s2 arc with Spock is pulling even more attention away from their *own* ensemble. Doug Jones can do no wrong.

    Say Hi To Hedgehogs!

    C. loves the book, by the way! It was one of her earliest words to request it: "HA-too."

    Star Trek General

I'm watching! Sometimes it has bits I like a lot (most of them involve Tilly or Saru); sometimes I am amused by the classic-Trek-ness of the plots (interdimensional Tardigrades?? Oh, sure, of course), but mostly I do not think it is very good narratively or in characterizations. I've heard good things about "Orville" also - right now I'm kind of in "so many shows, so little time" mode, though. Mostly just watching Disco because M is into it, so we watch together.
  22. M and I tried rewatching Hellboy 2 a couple years ago and couldn't even finish it. Doesn't hold up IMO

    eyyyy

I've used it in a bunch of other places, actually - kind of related to my RL last name.
  24. Are we talking the Burton Batman here, I assume? I couldn't vote against it, mad nostalgia of how scared I was as a kid
