22 wondering how far we'll get this time
-
I am 100% behind having Mafia here. I want to continue playing. I do not want to post on The Center in any capacity. You may have seen The Center got invited to the cross-forum Mafia Universe game, if we're interested in sending our own representative as well I'm sure we can work something out. In terms of launching a game here, we'll iron it out but I personally want it and a proviso that "what happens in the game, stays in the game" but ultimately that's a discussion to be had with everyone and web in particular. That aside... I'm sorry for your loss Hojo, happy to hear about the girlfriend and the driving however. Hopefully we'll get another chance to meet up irl soon.

Comic Book Movie Mini Tournament - Finals

But how is your cannon ignorance? -
I dunno man, I wasn't rating the Rays at all but watching their game yesterday they looked good. Like, finishing top two in the ALE good.

Now that I've actually finished the show, I've mellowed out on my "this isn't very good" stance. I still think the characters actions aren't empathetic (dear god Luther what the actual fuck) and it shamelessly rips off other stories (you telling me White Violin isn't just Dark Willow ya?) but... the shamelessness of it is kinda appealing. The time travel shit makes no sense, don't even try to approach it with anything but a suspension of disbelief. And other minor gripes. Would I recommend it? I'll still lean No to be honest. You'd be better spending your time on I dunno, Watchmen or something. Will I watch Season 2? For sure. Need to know the actual deal with the Dad now.

Comic Book Movie Mini Tournament - Day 9
Garlic Junior replied to Deimos's topic in Tournaments & Games
It wasn't a huge nosedive or anything, I think it just depends who you got invested in. I was all-in on Joker v Batman and didn't really care too much about Harvey/Rachel/Bruce and tbh felt that Harvey was going to become Two Face in the next film. When the focus shifted more to him I just didn't care so much. But if you were into Harvey's story from the start you probably didn't notice any change. -

Heath Ledger's Joker is one of the finest performances put to film. I can agree that the BATMAN aspects of the Batman film maybe aren't that great, or that the movie takes a downturn in quality when Harvey Dent becomes the focus, but still.... The Joker vs Infinity War is not even a contest. The best of Marvel can't hold a candle to The Joker, and when we talk about drops in quality you really think Quill's jealous jibes at Thor or the side mission with the giant dwarf are gonna hold up over repeated viewings? Shoehorning in the Red Skull? The opening disregarding Ragnarok entirely? The Hulk doing fuck all? Come on. -
Look, it has had its ups and downs (and down and further down) but... I am here to tell you, if you are a lapsed viewer, this season has been amazing. We got a new showrunner. Everyone, even diehard fans, were ready to drop it by the end of last season. But this new runner, Angela Kang, has basically dragged the show back to glory. The episode that aired this week was the grestest, most emotional episode I've seen so far and I have actual high hopes going into next season. If you're a season or four behind... catch up. It will be rough going but worth it to get to where we are now I absolutely promise you.

Would anyone be up for doing a "Who lives/dies" prediction contest for the final season?

I goddamn ADORE YouTube so I'm gonna have to be a little careful here or I'll end up sharing 3,000 channels: The Hoax Hotel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnNlJNSRxa3PF8XrKHOEPug A new find, think 419eater in animated form. Dude phones scammers and casually wastes their time to give them less time to scam others. Scammers get angry. Dude calls back continually. Summoning Salt https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtUbO6rBht0daVIOGML3c8w Even if you have only a passing knowledge of what Speedeunning is, this guy's videos are so well produced before long you'll be watching him talk about games you never GAF about before. Basically takes a game and details the history of the people who have held the records for fastest completion over the years. Ryukahr https://www.youtube.com/user/ryukahr Look, there are a LOT of talented Mario gamers out there. If you like this then check out Grand PooBear, Mitchflowerpower, Dode, Pangea, darbian, to name a few. But while some are more talented but not very entertaining to listen to (Dode) and others are less talented but can talk up an empty room (Poo), ryukahr is the perfect blend of easy listening, insightful commentary and some mad skillz while seeming like a normal dude. Postmodern Jukebox https://www.youtube.com/user/ScottBradleeLovesYa Modern songs given a 50s/60s twist. And finally a short list of the best movie reviewers/discussion channels: Let Me Explain - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3WGuV8xgGZAk2B2itJqgDg Lessons From The Screenplay - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCErSSa3CaP_GJxmFpdjG9Jw Chris Stuckmann aka actually fucking webhead - https://www.youtube.com/user/ChrisStuckmann The Closer Look - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI9DUIgtRGHNH_HmSTcfUbA The Unusual Suspect - https://www.youtube.com/user/UnusualSuspect2013 Now You See It - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWTFGPpNQ0Ms6afXhaWDiRw And the absolute pinnacle of YouTube movie discussion who sadly stopped posting videos two years ago, the utterly brilliant Every Frame A Painting - https://www.youtube.com/user/everyframeapainting

I don't dispute the science, but the story beats were jarring as fuck.

I know there's a few basketball nerds out there. Anybody read Kobe's book yet?

I know, I was going to sidebar something but felt I was beginning to rant which wasn't my intention.

Following - Have not seen. Memento - Gets my vote but I think his brother deserves far more credit. Everyone focuses on the gimmick of the black & white vs colour, forward/backward dual narrative shit but forgot that the STORY strength enabled the direction of the film and not vice versa. Insomnia - Can't even remember if I've seen. Batman Begins - If this was the only movie in the Batman trilogy it would be heralded as a classic but is sadly overshadowed. Still great. Would argue it for top three. The Prestige - Again, gets overshadowed by Memento for the "ole switcharoo" gimmick movie of his filmography but I'd also put this in the fight for third. The Dark Knight - Second best movie in this criteria, but a contender for GOAT movie and the death of Heath Ledger tragically gives it that extra mystique. An actual FORCE of a performance that drags the rest of the movie kicking and screaming along behind him, if his portrayal of The Joker isn't the single greatest performance of all time it is certainly in the conversation. Everyone else does their part well, and by well I mean far more than average, but a great Two-Face is always going to be diminished alongside a GODLY Joker. Inception - Loved it on first viewing. Confused, but loved it. Second viewing I enjoyed half the characters less. I mean, Michael Caine isn't his character, he is clearly Caine in a Nolan film. Ellen Page is just "Ellen Page". And repeated viewings strip away everyone until your left with, upon the fifth or sixth viewing, only Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy feeling like characters and not paid actors. The beginning of style over substance Nolan. The Dark Knight Rises - Bane was incredible. That opening was incredible. Various scenes were incredible. That twist was... weird. Scarecrow officiating court proceedings was.... weird. On repeated viewings, the extras not connecting with their punches was.... weird. I'm being taken out of the movie again. Help. Interstellar - Okay, I'm liking the performances. But suddenly he's went from a field to some weird government meeting where they have determined HE is humanity's last hope. Why? Because it's in the script. Okay, time is working weird now. Why? Because it's in the script. Matt Damon is here now. Why? In the script. Funny robot? Script. Weird ending? Script. Sloppy seconds from 2001? Script. Moral of the story? Script. Dunkirk - And we arrive at the pinnacle of "style over substance" Nolan that began with Inception. This, and I say this with a straight face, is a movie made by a film lover for lovers of film. It exists purely because Nolan wants it to exist. It is the equivalent of James Cameron making Titanic because he wanted to fuck around with underwater cameras. Christopher Nolan envisaged a tight shot of Tom Hardy flying a plane and built the entire film around that one scene making it to theatres for movie buffs to masturbate over. It is not BAD and its existence is not having a negative impact on the world, but it is art rather than entertainment and it may be an objectively "good" "movie", it is not going to be his "best" and comes across surprisingly soulless. tl;dr I fucking love Nolan's films even if everything since Inception is a "one and done" and everything before it is "rewatch these fucking glorious nuggets of gold every week for three years".

Comic Book Movie Mini Tournament - Day 8
Garlic Junior replied to Deimos's topic in Tournaments & Games
The only match up that isn't entirely unfair. Movie I haven't seen yet vs one of the greatest MOVIES of all time, not constrained by genre or anything, just a potential GOAT. The Dark Knight wins I don't know. I really don't. Infinity War felt like a bit of a walk down memory lane, a love poem to the generation that enabled geeks to inherit the earth, from Iron Man to Black Panther. As a movie, it started weak (Ragnarok seemed like an afterthought), picked up, ended strong. Wonder Woman was almost the opposite, a gigantic streaming piss over the memories of shit DC movies, showing what could have been, starting strong, gaining strength and ending weak. I give the slightest nod to Wonder Woman with my tried-and-tested method of if both came on TV right now, I'd be more likely to rewatch WW today. But it's the thinnest of margins. The movie they couldn't make (GOTG) which turned out to be good, vs the movie that was expected to be good and turned out phenomenal. Winter Soldier to me is the Marvel movie that really showcased that these could be great standalone films, while GOTG strangely gained pop culture reverence. But, I can't help feel that without Winter Soldier, not as many people would have sparked the fire that became GOTG's mainstream love. So the nod goes to the trailblazer. Homecoming. I feel I need to rewatch GOTG2 a few times, but as much as I loved the character work from the original cast, and I think THEY did their stuff better than the first, fuck I just can't suspend my disbelief for Ego and his planet eating bullshit. It's a step too far. -
Welcome dude!

I actually want this tournament now.

He played Glasgow last year and walked through the crowd sharing his mic with us for Get Through The Day and it honestly made me want to weep. Just football (soccer) really. MLS is a fucking beast of a league to bet on both teams scoring. First week, 23 of the 24 teams scored for example. I've tried horse racing but don't really understand it enough. I was able to work a system where you put in like ten to twenty losses to then make that up with a big win or two but I still have a lot to learn. Basketball seems great to gamble on but there's just not enough hours in the day. If the games were on during the day over here I could probably learn more. I like Black Flag, just trying to save money a lot this year but after June I'll make a point to come visit. Going to Download in June.
